Montreal - After meeting with representatives of Armen Karo Student Association, Canadian MP Justin Trudeau has agreed not to take part in January's Canadian Turkish Youth Congress, where he would have shared the panel with world-renowned Armenian Genocide denier Dr Justin McCarthy.
Mr Trudeau met with members Mardig Taslakian and Shant Karayan on Tuesday, 15 December 2009. He was given a letter explaining the reasons behind our disagreement with his participation, and also revealing the truth about McCarthy's stance on the Armenian Genocide. The letter was signed by 10 student and youth organisations from across Canada.
Taslakian and Karayan reassured Mr Trudeau that they were not against the convention in principal; however, the signatories of the letter have taken issue with a Canadian MP - a representative of the Canadian Government - sharing the stage with a very well known Genocide denier. The legitimisation of McCarthy's work, they said, could give credence to the denial of other genocides, too, inhibiting the possibilities of justice for victim groups. Mr Trudeau revealed that he had been unaware McCarthy's stance, and that Armen Karo Student Association's initial communications with him in early December had triggered his interest in discovering more about McCarthy and the Armenian Genocide in general. At that time, Mr Trudeau took the information provided Armen Karo Student Association and consulted both heads of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Canada to further understand the matter.
Mr Trudeau fully agreed with the concerns presented to him at the meeting and decided to withdraw from being physically present at the event. Instead, he sent a video of himself speaking about the importance of youth being involved in politics in our country, and promised to add a note about the Armenian Genocide in his speech.
Taslakian and Karayan also gave Mr Trudeau books and documents about the Armenian Genocide and Nagorno-Karabakh War.
This is another victory for justice, This is another victory for human rights, This is another victory for the Armenian youth of Canada! |
