Azerbaijan Protests Church Construction in Karabakh Print E-mail

Azerbaijan’s State Committee for the Work with Religious Associations expressed a protest against construction of an orthodox church in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) that was not agreed with the Azeri authorities.

The head of the committee press service Saleh Aslanov stated that construction of a Russian orthodox church in Stepanakert demonstrates disrespect for principles of international law and Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, 1news reported.

A cross has been put in the construction site for the orthodox cathedral in Stepanakert.

“Each religious temple can be built in Azerbaijan’s territory only by permission of Azerbaijani Government”, protesters said.

“Nagorno Karabakh is the territory of Azerbaijan. Each temple – either Orthodox, or Catholic, or Moslem mosque etc, can be built only by the permission of Azerbaijani Government. But the groundwork of orthodox church in Khankandi has been laid without the permission of Azerbaijan. Some kind of community may be recorded there, but one must have permission for construction in this territory”, they said.
